Tzedek Sings!

Register here and join Tzedek Sings! for creative community music making led by violinist/violist, cantorial soloist, and Yiddish dance leader Hannah Mira Friedland. Fostering musical and cultural exploration in a supportive environment, participants will primarily learn music rooted in the diasporic Yiddish folksong and klezmer music living traditions, sometimes incorporating music from additional Jewish cultural traditions and languages and newly composed settings. As part of the group’s repertoire, Tzedek Sings will prepare several special melodies for the High Holidays, Hanukkah, and Pesach services, during which the group will lead the congregation in song. In addition to programmed repertoire, participants will be encouraged to offer music they wish to explore together during song sessions.

Song sessions will take place approximately twice per month on Sunday afternoons leading up to the High Holidays, after which we'll shift to meeting once a month. Each session, we'll begin with a "slow jam" deep-dive into learning one new song. We'll then take a short break to snack and schmooze, followed by a zingeray (Yiddish for singalong) where we'll review and build upon repertoire and have space to try new music.

This program is intended for Tzedek Chicago members ages 12+ who want to sing and make music together- no singing experience necessary! You do not need to be able to read sheet music.

Instrumentalists are welcome to join, too, but please note that you will be asked to sing or play only the melody, often learning by ear, until the group has the melody down. From there, you'll be invited to add rhythmic instrumental groove, chords, harmony lines, and interludes! Instrumentalists who wish to join should already be able to play several scales if playing a pitched instrument.

Note:  Tzedek Sings is open to members only. If you are interested in joining Tzedek Sings but are not currently a member, please consider becoming a member today as a sustaining supporter of our community.

Fan Fiction on the Book of Genesis: A Guide to Close Reading of and Creative Writing on the Bible

Join us for a program featuring Rabbi Brant and Tzedek Chicago member Sarah Rosenson, author of the recently published book Fan Fiction on the Book of Genesis: A Guide to Close Reading and Creative Writing on the Bible.

The modern phenomenon of fan fiction involves readers writing creative pieces that answer questions left open in favorite works of literature. This also describes the ancient tradition of midrash, where readers write stories filling in gaps in the Bible.

In this program, Sarah will highlight how her book discusses the questions left open in the first book of the Bible, which can serve as prompts for conversations or creative writing. Those interested in reading Biblical stories through a new and creative lens are encouraged to attend!

This event is free and open to the public. Register here!

Standing Again at Sinai, Again: Reading and Rereading Torah in Tumultuous Times with Professor Judith Plaskow

Standing Again at Sinai, Again: Reading and Rereading Torah in Tumultuous Times with Professor Judith Plaskow

Every year on Shavuot, Jews ritualize the receiving of Torah at Sinai through many hours of study: Torah, we are taught on this and many occasions, is meant to be wrestled with, challenged, lived, and celebrated, through digging in to the contradictions of the text and asking hard questions. For those of us marginalized in Torah and by much of the rabbinic text tradition, this practice of wrestling with Torah is what makes it possible to to read it. How do we wrestle skillfully, in ways that enhance our Jewish lives and proliferate Torah that is relevant to our times?

For decades, Professor Judith Plaskow has been one of the leading scholars and creators of feminist Jewish theology and culture. Her wrestling with Jewish tradition and text, in 1991’s Standing Again at Sinai: Judaism from a Feminist Perspective, and The Coming of Lilith: Essays on Feminism, Judaism, and Sexual Ethics, 1972-2003, and more, has shaped generations of Torah students and scholars. Today, while women, queer and trans Jews have done incredible work fundamentally reshaping the misogyny, patriarchy and homophobia in our tradition, there is still plenty of work to do. Everyday we face renewed challenges reading Torah, including texts that condone and celebrate violence, militarism, conquest, and supremacy, while Israel continues its oppressive Jewish-supremacist regime and violent occupation.

As we prepare for Shavuot, Rabbi Jessica Rosenberg is honored to welcome Professor Judith Plaskow for a virtual conversation at Tzedek Chicago about Torah and how we read it. We will discuss ways of reading and interpreting texts and engaging with tradition in politically aligned ways. How can those of us wrestling with Torah today learn from the generations of leftist text wrestlers who come before us and are still here?

Register here.

The Stories of Seders, Planning a Seder of Stories with Rabbi Jessica Rosenberg

A seder is a ritual of storytelling: the Exodus story, overlaid and interwoven with stories of our lives and times. How do we meaningfully engage with the Exodus story year after year, and discern what stories from this year are ours to tell? How do we craft a seder ritual that not only tells stories, but shows and feels our stories, and practices, living into transformative stories? Join Rabbi Jessica Rosenberg for an interactive workshop to reflect on Maggid, on story, and prepare for Pesach. Register here.

NOTE: This will be a two hour session, with 90 minutes of presentation and discussion, and the last 30 minutes for a Q&A about seder planning and leading questions. If you are leading a seder for the 1st or 100th time, looking for a charoset recipe or a salt water themed poem, join us!
