THE HISTORY OF ZIONISM:

A Five-Part Series Created and Led by Rabbi Brant Rosen

In this five-part virtual series, Rabbi Brant Rosen will present five Zionist ideologues, who were, and remain, pivotal to the growth of the Zionist movement. This course will be a text study, utilizing primary sources. All readings will be distributed to registrants ahead of time, to be read prior to class.

November 11: Theodor Herzl and Political Zionism
December 9: Ahad Ha’am and Cultural Zionism
January 13: Vladimir Jabotinsky and Revisionist Zionism
February 10: AD Gordon and Labor Zionism
March 10: Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and Religious Zionism

Central guiding questions will include:
• How can we understand these figures and their ideas in an historical context? How are they being reconsidered today?
• How do these Zionist ideologies represent a break from Judaism and Jewish life up until that point?
• How do we understand these ideas within the context of ethnic nationalism and settler colonialism?
• What is the legacy of these forms of Zionism today?
