Joy in the Struggle: A Fundraiser for Tzedek Chicago to honor Maya Schenwar

Join us for a very special evening to support congregation Tzedek Chicago and to honor the
important, transformative work of journalist, writer, organizer Maya Schenwar.

Maya is the Editor-in-Chief of Truthout, an independent social justice news website. She is also
an important writer/organizer in the prison abolition movement and co-author (with Victoria
Law) of “Prison by Any Other Name: The Harmful Consequences of Popular Reforms” and
the author of “Locked Down, Locked Out: Why Prison Doesn’t Work and How We Can Do Better.”

As a longtime member of Tzedek Chicago, Maya’s work embodies so many of the sacred core
values at the heart of our congregational life. We are so thrilled to celebrate her work at
Tzedek’s annual fundraiser.

Our featured speaker for the evening will be Bernardine Dohrn, who was a clinical associate
professor of the Northwestern University School of Law and founding director of the Children
and Family Justice Center.

Our evening will feature moments of tribute, music, inspiration and other joyful surprises. We
look forward to seeing you there!
