At our morning Yom Kippur service this year, cantorial soloist Leah Shoshanah led us in a moving rendition of You Want it Darker, one of Leonard Cohen’s most deeply Jewish songs, written for the final album he released before his death. You Want it Darker is a song in the tradition of Hineni, or "Here I am."
If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game
If you are the healer, it means I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame.
